In the spring and summer of 1992 Eric's Trip had a new found excitement. We were getting really comfortable as a band, playing more shows, making new friends in Halifax, and writing lots of new songs. We recorded our first 7 inch in March, and while waiting for it's release, we were preparing another full length indie cassette album.
Chris and Julie switched instruments somewhere during the spring, but the change over went quite smoothly. We were still recording on an old cassette 4track at Chris's folks house, and by July i had these ten songs layed out. Even this cassette cover design was ready to go when the offer came to do a CD e.p. with Sloan's new Murder Records label.
With the idea of releasing our first CD now in my head, I wasn't happy with the recordings i had done here. The drums were especially not cutting through very well, the cymbal heavy one mic drum recording had very little clarity beneath the guitar and bass racket, i wanted to re-record it all again. We did more recording through the autumn, concentrating on getting a better sound, and eventually released new versions/mixes of NEED, LISTEN, HAPPENS ALL THE TIME, and HAZE along with a song from our "Warm Girl" cassette called TANGLES and an acoustic song Julie and I did called DEEPER. That release was called the "Peter e.p." named after a couple new guys in our life. Our new Moncton friend who's scratched glasses appear on the autumny cover, and Peter Rowan who was becoming our manager. People still thought it sounded "lo-fi".
One thing that's always haunted me about the released "Peter" e.p. is that it plays one semitone down in pitch. It's a little slow. I think the reason was because i sent off a stereo cassette copy of the final mix to master from and there must have been a pitch difference between the tape decks used. We tuned our guitars standard to 440, and for example "Need" starts in G when played, but it's F# on the CD. Over the years i kinda forgot about it until re-listening to this tape recently and hearing the songs in the right key again for the first time in 25 years.
So this "Listen" cassette album was left unreleased as a whole until now, though mixes of WONDER, EVIE and FELL (also with slowed pitch) were added to the "Long Days Ride..." compilation in 1996. EVIE's recording date was listed wrong in the album notes, saying Nov.92 instead of July. SMOTHER was re-recorded in early 1993 for the "Never Mind the Molluscs" SubPop compilation 7inch, though this earlier version did eventually appear on our "Bootleg" 12 inch in 2007. This version of SO EASIER LAST TIME in a different mix was on the "Warm Girl" 7inch released in 1993, and FLOAT was re-recorded in Nov.93 for a Summershine/Subpop 7inch.
I always felt these 10 songs should have remained together as a group, and as noisy and rough as these recordings are, i thought some of you may enjoy hearing this.

Eric's Trip was my main focus by the summer of 1991, we were playing local shows, getting a bit of a following and had put three cassettes out since December 1990. I was in the flow of writing lots of songs and learning to really enjoy the process. One day while over at Julie's folks house, I noticed her Mom's cool 80's Yamaha PS55 keyboard and played around with it a bit. It was my first time really playing with a casio type home keyboard and I especially dug the one finger controlled rhythm section stuff. The PS55 felt kinda fancy with it's bigger scale and nice stereo sound. Her Mom got a kick out of watching me making up funny little songs on the spot and said i should take it home for a few days and write some "Pop hits".
I took her up on the offer and over the next few days recorded these 12 little songs. I made this cartoon cover art for the tape back then too but never sold any copies. A few may have got around to friends but I'm not sure. I really enjoyed hearing it again recently though and thought i should add it to the archive here for safe keeping.
I gave the keyboard back to her Mom after this session but borrowed it again a few times over the years. It's a fun way to write songs and helps you come up with things that you normally would never write on a guitar. Several Eric's Trip and Elevator songs were written on similar keyboards I've had since. Usually changed over to guitars after writing but sometimes appearing in their original form like "Killing Myself" from my Parts 1+2 album, "The Leaf" from Taste of Complete Perspective or my whole PERPLEXIS album from 2002 for example.
Anyhow, this is where all my Portasound/Casio love started.
Hope you dig it. All songs written by Rick White except Pennies which takes it's lyrics from a Mike Feuerstack demo.

Notes
Eric's Trip formed in early June 1990, Chris and Rick played together in a band called The Forest through 1989 and early 1990 with Chris on drums and Rick playing guitar and singing.
As The Forest fell apart, Rick and Julie got together and started writing new music with two guitars and harmony vocals. Chris wanted to move away from drumming and play bass so we looked for a new drummer. Our friend Ed Vaughan was always hanging around with us, so Chris taught him the basics of how to play drums and we started jamming tunes with him sitting in.
Before we knew it, we had a bunch of new songs sounding pretty cool with Ed and decided to stick to this lineup. We were after a thick loud noisey sound mixed with dreamy mellow vocals and the sloppy drumming seemed to blend into the racket quite nicely. We were gathering up cheap and big old used Traynor amps and practicing lots down in Chris's folks non-soundproofed basement. Eric's Trip was loud, thanks so much to his folks and all the neighbours, not sure how you could stand it, ha.
By December 1990 we had ten songs together and wanted to record a tape. Using a borrowed cassette 4track, a couple sm57 mics, four cheap Realistic (Radioshack) mics and a little Realistic 6 channel mixer we did just that. The two guitars, bass and drums were recorded live into the 4track with 3 mics on drums going through the little mixer into one track. We got the 10 songs recorded that day, then during the next week we worked on adding the vocals.
At this primitive stage in our recording career, here is how we did this. Set up at Julie's folks house, we played the recorded 4tracks back through the six channel Realistic mixer. Monitoring through her folks stereo speakers, we got a mix we liked then sung live along with the playback into a 5th channel on the mixer. Recording the result live onto a stereo cassette deck.
This worked pretty good once we got the levels okay but there is an audible low end bleed throughout from using the speakers instead of headphones to monitor while we sang.
